Haldi: The Deets

A little primer for our joyful Thursday-morning Haldi: what it means, what will happen, and what to wear when turmeric is part of the celebration.

A Haldi ceremony celebration
Haldi is a colorful celebration filled with blessings, laughter, and love.

Haldi is one of the happiest ways to begin a wedding celebration. It is relaxed, colorful, a little messy, and all about gathering the people you love around you before the big day.

So, what is Haldi?

Haldi is a pre-wedding tradition centered around turmeric. Loved ones apply a turmeric paste to the couple as a way to offer blessings, good wishes, and a little pre-wedding glow. The ritual is rooted in care and celebration, but the feeling of the morning is anything but formal.

Think music, laughter, family moments, and plenty of photos as everyone gathers around the couple. There is nothing you need to memorize or do perfectly. Come, watch, cheer, and join in if a family member invites you forward.

What should I wear?

The short answer: something bright, festive, comfortable, and not too precious. Yellow, gold, orange, pink, and other cheerful colors are especially fitting, though there is no required color or dress code. Indian attire such as a kurta, lehenga, or salwar suit is warmly welcome, as are colorful dresses, jumpsuits, and lightweight separates.

Wear color. Expect joy. Do not fear the turmeric.

One practical note: turmeric can stain. Choose an outfit you will not be heartbroken to mark, and leave delicate fabrics or treasured pieces at home. Since we will be outdoors on the rooftop, comfortable shoes, a light layer, sunglasses, and sun protection are all good ideas.

Come ready to celebrate

The ceremony usually begins with close family applying small amounts of the turmeric paste to the couple, often on the face, hands, or feet. As the moment builds, more relatives and friends are invited to offer their own blessings. There may be music, teasing, happy tears, and a little turmeric on guests who get close to the action.

The best way to experience Haldi is simply to be present. Follow the family’s lead, enjoy the color and energy of the morning, and bring your biggest smile. We cannot wait to share this playful tradition with you.
